A friend who is a Catholic priest told me the other day that he participated in the funeral of a friend of his. I was thinking that this was too bad, that he had to "work" the service.
But then I realized that especially for him, this was a wonderful, practical way for him to celebrate his relationship with the deceased. He was able to actively perform ritual that brought him comfort and affirmed their beliefs and principles.
I saw his participation as a wonderful act of service, instead of a "work situation".
This is the same friend whose Jubilee I posted about some time back.
And just to show that he truly has a sense of humor, he pointed out to me that there was a typo in the obituary in the newspaper. The description of him as the person who gave the homily came out as "homliest Father Spencer."
Bright Blessings,
