My back yard is absolutely Oz at this time of year. The bushes at the fence in back and along the sides have leafed out and blossomed. The grass has greened up with enthusiasm. The eight lilac bushes along the north edge of the property are just now opening blooms, while my neighbor's over the fence are fading. The daffodils, jonquils, and narcissi have finished blooming, but their green leaves remain, ready to store food for next spring's colorful display. The forsythia at the corner of the house has finished blooming and now the green leaves are covering the branches in abundance. The peonies are bushing up, but no blossoms are visible yet.
The trees at the street in the front are old enough that they have grown out over the street overhead, and they mingle branches to make a shady tunnel to drive or walk down. It seems to be a protected area, safe from the burning sun rays and the curious glances of the clouds.
When it rains, it looks like we're in an aquarium; the air turns green and lush in echo of all the plants that reach up to drink the quenching water. I love to sit on the front porch or the back patio and listen to the rain, feel it on my skin, and smell the intoxicating air. Sometimes I get up at night and sit outside to watch the lightening during a storm.
There are myriads of bunnies in the back yard. They cavort all over the lawn, running in and out of the bushes and making loops on the lawn. They play leapfrog (leaprabbit?) and enjoy frolicking, without realizing that the things they are learning will be survival skills for them later. They are so tame they will come up on the patio and curiously investigate whoever is sitting there. They are close enough that you could reach out and touch them, but that would break the spell.
After a long, grey winter, I feel closed up inside the house and need to get out for a bit. Wish I had a wireless connection to a notebook computer so I could blog outside. I'd say that I would work out there, too, but I think we all know better.
Bright Blessings,
Spiral Crone
